There is a particular trap that catches faithful, long-serving people: the moment a role shifts from something we do into something we are. Good morning. This is Northword.

The grip tightens not because the work needs you, but because you need the work. Good morning, this is Northword, The Word, The North, Your Week, a daily podcast from St. John's Fort Smith in collaboration with the Anglican family. I'm your host, Father Aaron. There is a particular trap that catches good people. Those who have served well and faithfully for a long time. Somewhere along the way, the role that they have becomes identity. The control becomes something they cannot imagine relinquishing. Not because the work requires it, but because they require the work. When we are operating out of our old insecure nature, a quiet possessiveness moves in automatically. The grip tightens. Others who might share the role are quietly resisted. Years pass, it becomes who they are. A habit formed through a thousand small accommodations with no single conscious decision. But in Christ's condition, a different path is open to us. The desire to control still arises. There is still an internal voice that whispers, you are needed, you are irreplaceable, things will fall apart without you. That voice doesn't disappear, but a person standing in grace can pause right when that urge hits and name what is actually happening. They can say, I know what this is, and I do not have to obey it. My identity is not in this role. My identity is in Christ. And in that act of letting go, something happens that cannot be manufactured by sheer willpower. The obedience of Christ begins to find expression from within us. This isn't about stepping back from meaningful work, it's about holding it rightly, with open hands rather than clenched fists.
